Symposium on Assessment of demersal resources by direct methods in the Mediterranean and the adjacent seas

Scopes of the Symposium

During the last few decades, different local, national and international programmes have been conducted in different areas using bottom trawl surveys. The principal objective of the Symposium is to explore the developments obtained from this approach to assess and study demersal resources in the Mediterranean and the adjacent Seas. Contributions examining the dynamics and the assemblages of species along a continuum of spatial and temporal scales are solicited. Descriptions on new technological advances, methodology and analytical approaches tested in the Mediterranean and in other seas showing the same kind of situation will be welcomed as well.

Main topic

Contributions are encouraged in the following research areas :

Improvement in methodology : sampling scheme, intercalibration between gears and vessels, data analysis, etc.;

Spatial and temporal distribution : variability over the survey area with respect of single species as well as species communities;

Population dynamics : use of surveys to assess fish stocks and to manage fisheries (recruitment, exploitable biomass, sex and/or age groups segregation, etc.).

Structure

The Symposium will feature invited presentations providing overviews of keys issues related to the use of trawl surveys for the fishery management. Contributed papers will be presented in sessions addressing principal topics. A session devoted to synthesis and discussion of the principal themes of the Symposium will conclude the meeting. The official language of the Symposium will be English.

Publication

All the papers will be published in proceedings which will be circulated to the participants before the meeting. A selection of the communications will be proposed for a special issue to an international scientific review.

Date and venue

The Symposium will be held 19-21 March 1998 in Pisa (Italy).
